Start with the model name, then ask us to confirm drive bays, supported storage media, included network ports and the appropriate operating system. Optional upgrades and drives are not assumed to be included.

Plan a rack installation around the workload.

Check cabinet depth and rack units, rails, power supply configuration, ventilation and network connections. A redundant power supply and a separate backup solve different problems; both need a deliberate plan.

Which layout should I consider?

The best choice depends on your needs. Capacity arithmetic alone cannot select a NAS. Confirm model-supported RAID, drive compatibility, memory, networking, workload and backup arrangements. SHR is Synology-specific; do not apply an SHR recommendation to QNAP. Neither RAID nor snapshots on the same system replace an independent backup.

Example: four equal 8TB drives provide 32TB raw capacity. RAID 5 leaves approximately 24TB decimal capacity before formatting, filesystem and other overheads. Reported binary capacity is lower. This example is not a compatibility recommendation; supported RAID layouts depend on the model and software.

RAID is not a backup. It can help with certain drive failures, but it does not replace independent copies against deletion, theft or a compromised system. Plan off-site or isolated copies and recovery testing.
