A Synology NAS (Network Attached Storage) is essentially your own private, secure cloud. It is a dedicated hardware device filled with hard drives that connects to your office or home network. It lets you store, back up, and share files across all your devices without relying on third-party cloud subscriptions.
Beyond simple storage, a Synology NAS acts as a centralized data hub with several key benefits:
  • No Monthly Subscriptions: You pay for the hardware and drives upfront, avoiding the recurring fees of services like Google Drive or Dropbox.
  • Automated Backups: It continuously and automatically protects all PCs and Macs on your network.
  • Anywhere Access: You can access your files securely from any web browser, desktop, or mobile device using features like Synology QuickConnect.
  • Data Protection: It uses RAID technology, meaning if one drive physically fails, your data remains safe and accessible.
  • Extensibility: The built-in operating system (DiskStation Manager or DSM) allows you to install free apps to turn the NAS into a media server, a private email server, or a Network Video Recorder (NVR) for security cameras.

Histroy -

Founded in 2000 by ex-Microsoft engineers Cheen Liao and Philip Wong, Synology Inc. revolutionized network storage by bringing enterprise-level functions to affordable hardware. Starting with a BSD-based OS called Filer OS, they launched their first commercial NAS, the DiskStation DS-101, in 2004. Over the years, their signature DiskStation Manager (DSM) evolved from a basic file-server system into a comprehensive graphical operating system.

Today, Synology is a global leader in Network-Attached Storage (NAS), celebrated primarily for its intuitive software and powerful application ecosystem. Some of their defining historical milestones include:
  • 2004: Released the DiskStation DS-101, marking their entry into the complete NAS hardware and software solutions market.
  • 2008 (DSM 2.2): Shifted the NAS from a simple file server to a multimedia and server-efficiency tool with a graphical interface.
  • 2010: Launched the USB Station 2, merging network storage with external USB drives.
  • 2012: Released the DS213air, an innovative step that integrated wireless tech directly into a budget NAS.
  • Present: Synology has over 13 million installations worldwide, powering everything from personal cloud storage to enterprise-grade tools like Active Backup and Synology Drive
